Like everything else about how we live, all those hours we spent at home in 2020 are influencing design trends for 2021. We’re re-thinking how we use the rooms in our homes. Flex space is golden. Ditto for patios, porches and decks. Home gyms are on more people’s radar than ever before.

Survey results from interior designers and architects point to a bolder palette and a focus on health and wellness in the year ahead. Not surprisingly, the demand for home office space has skyrocketed. So has a preference for motifs from the natural world.

Before giving your family room a fresh coat of paint or creating a bigger and more functional home office, see what the pros are calling the top 4 trends in interior home design for 2021:

1. Colors from the 1970s are back. The hottest colors for 2021 include emerald, cobalt blue, burnt orange, and mustard. Designers are moving to bolder colors, robust jewel tones, and earth tones. Spending more time indoors has also led to a preference for grounded colors that evoke a sense of calm and comfort.

2. Flex space is in demand. Experts expect a big demand for kitchen, home office, and home gym renovations in 2021. The biggest trend in 2020 was the shift to home offices (up 24% over 2019). Almost half of the designers and architects surveyed believe home offices will continue to be the biggest trend in interior home design in 2021.

3. The natural world comes indoors. Look for more floral, organic and large-scale patterns in wall coverings and fabrics. An uptick in the demand for wood and stone is also predicted. Especially during winter, motifs and materials from the natural world are soothing and peaceful. Expect to see botanical wallpapers, nature-inspired murals, and potted plants and trees.

4. Health and wellness take priority. We’re all familiar with the toll that stress can take on our well-being. Designers are forecasting that we’ll prioritize wellness, comfort, and health in our surroundings, and take a greater interest in our patios and decks. We’ll be more intentional about creating spaces to relax in our home.
